Fickes Died Trying To Rescue Lt. Leach

Wilmington Fire Chief Anthony Goode told reporters today that Firefighter Jerry Fickes was trying to rescue Lt. Christopher Leach when he died. Goode also said that Leach was filling in for another officer that night.

Goode: “Rumors of recent car fires near the home are true. At this time we do not believe they are connected.” Goode asked for anyone with information about the fire to contact authorities.

Initially the collapse made it difficult for investigators to enter the home. Fire crews from around the state worked to shored up the rowhouse  so that investigators could make entry, Goode said.

Memorial Services are  tentatively scheduled for Saturday. Funeral plans have not been released.

Goode: said that the local firefighters  association website www.wilmingtonfirefighters.org should be referred to for details and donations.
