Serious Accident Closes Kirkwood Highway, Two In Hospital

Newark – At approximately 3:00 p.m. this afternoon a red pickup truck crossed the median at the intersection of Capital Trail (Kirkwood Highway) & Pike Creek Road. The truck then struck a small black hatchback pinning the driver inside.

Rescue crews from Aetna Hose Hook & Ladder Company and Mill Creek worked for about 45 minutes to extricate the woman.

Trooper 4 (Delaware State Police Aviation) landed on the Delaware Racing Association’s lawn but was not utilized. Reports from the scene indicate that the woman was in good enough condition to be transported by ground.

Witnesses at the scene said the driver of the truck may have been involved in a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Kirkwood Highway & Meadows (Near The IHOP). A second accident scene was at that intersection but authorities have not confirmed the two are related.

The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital.
