Wilmington – At approximately 4:15 p.m. this afternoon members of the Talleyville Fire Company, along with DNREC Park Police responded to Alapocas State Park for reports of an injured swimmer.
Arriving units found a man, in his 50’s, who was suffering from a fractured leg after he reportedly jumping off of a waterfall in Brandywine Creek. The man apparently injured himself when he struck a rock after jumping. Crews determined that it would be very difficult to carry the man up the long steep trail as a major storm was approaching. Trooper 4 (Delaware State Police Aviation) was called to the scene to remove the patient from the creek side before the approaching storm moved in.
Trooper 4 responded to the scene and landed at the Alapocas State Park Baseball Fields to prepared their gear for a hoist lift rescue. Once their gear was in order Trooper 4 began to hover over the patient’s location. An EMT was then lowered to prepared the patient for the hoist lift. The two where then raised into the helicopter.
At the same time that the patient was being hoisted into the aircraft the rain began to fall. It was determined at that point that Trooper 4 would once again land at the ball field and the patient would be transported via Talleyville Fire Company to the hospital.
The man’s injuries did not appear to be life threatening.
