Northwest Wilmington House Fire Leaves One Dead, Two Others In Hospital


Wilmington – At 11:30 pm last night Wilmington Firefighters on the D platoon were dispatched to a residential fire with people trapped inside, in the 100 block of West 37th Street, according to Public Information Officer Lieutenant Andrew Cavanaugh.

Cavanaugh said upon arrival of fire department units, crews were met with heavy fire conditions at the front door. Crews began an aggressive interior fire suppression effort with simultaneous search efforts. Initial reports given to arriving units indicated one person still inside the residence.

Crews performing the search of the residence found one adult male inside. The patient was removed and turned over to awaiting EMS and was transported in critical condition. The patient was pronounced deceased at the Christiana Hospital. A second patient, an adult female, was transported in critical condition after injuries sustained while escaping the fire. A third patient was transported with non-life threatening injuries.

The scene was placed under control by the incident commander, Battalion Chief Dennis Kirlin at 12:30 am, September 12, 2017. The scene is still active and the Wilmington Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

Cavanaugh said approximately 38 fire and EMS personnel responded to the fire. The following units responded: Squrt 3, Squad 4, Engine 5, Engine 2, Tower 1, Battalion 1, Battalion 2, Deputy 2, Deputy 3, FM-13, FM-14, FM-18, St. Francis EMS, and New Castle County Paramedics.
