Wilmington Police Officer Attacked By Pit Bull In Barricaded Suspect Home

Wilmington – A Wilmington Police Officer was injured this evening during a barricaded suspect incident, according to the Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Andrea Janvier.

Earlier in the evening Wilmington SWAT breached the front door of a home where they believed a shooting suspect was hold up. Police then sent in a robot to search the home via remote control.

As officers cleared the home a pit bull attacked a Wilmington Officer, injuring both of his hands, according to Janvier.

The officer was observed with bandages to both hands and was assisted by several officers to an awaiting ambulance.

The officer was taken to an area hospital, where he is being treated for the injuries to his hands.

Janvier said the suspect was not in the home when police made entry.  Wilmington Police remain on scene and are in the process of executing a search warrant, said Janvier.

This afternoon Wilmington Police Officers responded to Cedar Street­ and Anchorage Street in reference to a Shot Spotter Notification of gunfire, according to police. Officials said arriving police officer’s located an adult male down on the corner of Cedar and Anchorage suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to his upper torso. The victim was treated on scene by New Castle County Paramedics and transported to the Christiana Hospital Emergency Room in critical condition.
