Troopers ID Man Killed In Head On Collision On Route 1

Lewes – The Delaware State Police are releasing the name of the driver of the Toyota pickup truck involved in yesterday’s fatal crash south of Lewes as Thomas C. Frederick, 40 of Lewes, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Gary Fournier.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident.

Lewes – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred earlier this afternoon south of Lewes, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Gary Fournier.

Fournier said the incident occurred around 1:19 p.m. Monday October 9, 2017 as a 40-year-old Lewes man was operating a 2000 Toyota Tundra northbound on Coastal Highway (SR1) in the left lane just south of Dartmouth Drive. A 25-year-old Lewes female was operating a 2015 Chrysler 200 sedan southbound on Coastal Highway in the left lane in the same general vicinity. For undetermined reasons, the Tundra crossed the grass median into the southbound lanes and struck the Chrysler head-on in the left lane, said Fournier.

The 40-year-old operator of the Tundra was not properly restrained and was transported by EMS to Beebe Healthcare where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The 25-year-old female operator of the Chrysler was properly restrained and transported by EMS to Beebe Healthcare where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Impairment may be a factor on behalf of the operator of the Tundra, according to Fournier. The two left lanes of SR1 southbound and the far left lane of SR1 northbound, south of Dartmouth Drive were closed for two and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Fournier said the incident occurred around 1:19 p.m. Monday October 9, 2017 on Coastal Highway (SR1) southbound, south of Dartmouth Drive and involves two vehicles. Injuries have been reported in the crash, however, the exact number and extent of the injuries is unknown at this time.

The two left lanes of SR1 southbound, south of Dartmouth Drive are closed. Commuters should expect delays in the area and find alternate routes of travel.
