Middleton – On Friday, April 20, 2018 at approximately 11:27 in the morning, Middletown Police were dispatched to a complaint of shots fired in the Middletown Village community. Responding officers were informed that the suspect was fleeing in a black Dodge Charger with Delaware registration,  according to Middletown Chief of Police, Michael Iglio.

Iglio said responding MPD officers arrived shortly thereafter and located the suspect vehicle in the area of Ash Blvd and Foxtail Lane. The driver, later identified as Devantee Smith, a 21-year-old male of Newark,  fled on foot from officers, according to Iglio.

As Smith fled on foot he was observed throwing a handgun toward a retention pond, said Iglio. After a short chase, Smith was apprehended by MPD officers. Smith was found to be in possession of approximately 465 grams of marijuana, said Iglio. The discarded handgun was recovered near the edge of the retention pond.

Smith was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a controlled substance in a tier 1 quantity with an aggravating factor, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, resisting arrest, tampering with physical evidence, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving suspended or revoked.

Smith was arraigned and issued released on a $26,650 unsecured bond
