Late Night Police Search Has Elsmere-Area Residents Wondering

File

Elsmere – An intense police search near Elsmere had some residents on edge for about an hour last night.

Just before 10:00, Tuesday evening, First State Update began to receive word that a police search was underway near the Ferris School for Boys, on Route 141.

Residents began telling us, via social media, that Trooper 4, the Delaware State Police Aviation’s helicopter, was circling low over Elsmere, Willow Run, Oak Hill and the area near the Ferris School for Boys.

New Castle County Police, Delaware State Police, and Elsmere Police were searching yard to yard, as the helicopter circled overhead, according to some residents.

Residents telling us that the helicopter, coming low enough at times to rattle the windows of area homes, seemed to be focused on the Willow Run neighborhood.

Others were worried about what was going on. One resident asking “should my friends over near the Willow Run area be concerned about the helicopter? …”.

Many of the residents that contacted us said they were told that police were searching for an escapee. We have not been able to confirm that.

The incident seemed to wind down just after 10:00, when Trooper 4 alerted dispatch that they were returning to base.

Delaware State Police Spokesman, Micheal Austin said that the helicopter was assisting New Castle County Police. He did not provide any future details.

We’re working to gather more information regarding the search. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
