Worker Falls 35 Feet Inside Ship At The Port Of Wilmington

Shortly after 12:00 PM Wilmington Firefighters on the C platoon were alerted for an injured worker on vessel at Berth 6 in the Port of Wilmington.

Upon arrival of fire department units an updated report indicated an injured worker located on the ship, below deck approximately 35 feet.

Battalion Chief Michael Schaal arrived on scene, assumed command, and utilized the WFD Special Operations Team to affect a rescue.

The special operations rescue team descended down to the patient and packaged the patient in a stokes basket. Crews utilized the onboard crane to hoist the patient out of the hull of the ship and lowered over to dock side units.

Additional crews and EMS personnel transferred the patient from the stokes basket to the stretcher. The patient was transported to the Wilmington Hospital for treatment. The scene was placed under control at 1:26 PM by the Battalion Chief Schaal.

Approximately 15 fire and EMS personnel responded to the fire. The following units responded: Skyboom 2,
Squad 4, Ladder 1, Battalion-1, Battalion-2, St. Francis EMS, and New Castle County Paramedics
