New Castle – The Delaware State Police are investigating an armed robbery that took place at the New Castle Walmart just after midnight, according to Director of Public Information, Sergeant Richard Bratz.
Bratz said the preliminary investigation has determined the incident occurred at approximately 12:09 a.m., Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at the Walmart, located at 117 Wilton Boulevard, New Castle.
Troopers were dispatched to a robbery with shots fired in the store. It was reported an unknown black male suspect with his face covered entered the business brandishing a gun and confronted an employee at the cash register area of the store, said Bratz.
The suspect discharged his firearm into the ceiling of the business and demanded money, according to Bratz. An unknown black female then entered the store and immediately responded to the cash register area to assist the black male suspect, said Bratz.
An employee opened the secured door to the office to determine the cause of the commotion when the female suspect forced entry into the office armed with unknown type of weapon. Both suspects entered the office and demanded cash. Both employees complied with the demands by turning over and undisclosed amount of cash to the suspects.
At the time of the incident a subject was waiting outside of the business for a family member to finish her shift at Walmart when he heard the initial gunshot. He responded into the store and confronted the masked male suspect. The suspect then discharged an additional round and fled with the female suspect through the lawn and garden door, said Bratz. Neither the employees nor any patrons were injured as a result of the incident.
Residents reported seeing Trooper 4 circling the area searching for the suspects for roughly an hour.
Rescue crews from the Christiana Fire Company, along with New Castle County Paramedics also responded to the scene but we’re not needed.
