Troopers Investigating Motorcycle Crash That Left Rider In Critical Condition

Millsboro- Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a serious crash involving a motorcycle that occurred Saturday, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe the incident occurred at approximately 11:51 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018, when a 2016 GMC Canyon pickup truck pulling a boat trailer loaded with a pleasure boat, was traveling northbound on Oak Orchard Road (SR 5) approaching the entrance to the Oak Orchard Diner.

A 1988 Harley Davidson motorcycle, was traveling northbound behind the pickup truck. The operator of the truck began to turn right into the entrance of the Oak Orchard Diner. At the same time, the motorcycle began to pass the truck and its trailer on the right side. As a result, the front of the motorcycle struck the right front corner of the truck, said Jaffe. The motorcycle fell to its right side, ejecting the operator. The truck was able to come to a controlled stop in the parking lot of the Oak Orchard Diner.

The operator of the pickup truck, a 63-year-old man from Wilmington, and his passenger were properly restrained and both were uninjured as a result of this crash. Impairment does not appear to be a factor on behalf of the driver.

The operator of the motorcycle, a 58-year-old man from Lewes, was not wearing a helmet. He was transported by the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit to the Christiana Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. Impairment on his behalf is unknown at this time, said Jaffe.

Oak Orchard Road in the area of John J. Williams Highway was closed for approximately 2 1/2 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
