File

Milton – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Coastal Highway (SR 1) in the area of Truitt Road, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the crash was reported on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at approximately 5:17 a.m. when a passing motorist noticed a vehicle off the roadway and in a field. The preliminary investigation determined that a 2001 Volvo V70 Station Wagon was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway (SR1) approaching the intersection of Truitt Road. After passing Truitt Road, the Station Wagon failed to maintain its lane and exited Coastal Highway just north of Truitt Road, striking a signpost. After impacting the signpost, the Station Wagon continued to travel in a northeasterly direction when it collided with a standing tree in an open field, before coming to rest a short distance from the tree.

The operator and sole occupant, a 66-year-old male from Harrington was not wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Impairment on his behalf is unknown at this time. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Route 1 northbound in the area of Truitt Road was restricted to one lane while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information pertaining to this incident is asked to please contact Troop 7, Corporal A. Mitchell at 302-644-5020.
