79-Year-Old New York Man Struck By Pick-Up In Bethany Beach

Bethany Beach – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a serious crash involving a pedestrian that occurred yesterday, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at approximately 5:26 p.m. when a 2016 Nissan Frontier pick-up truck was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway in the left lane in Middlesex Beach, approaching the intersection of Hickman Plaza Drive. A pedestrian was walking in a westerly direction within the unlit and unregulated crosswalk. The operator of the pick-up truck did not observe the pedestrian and struck him with the front of his vehicle, said Jaffe.

The pedestrian, a 79-year-old male from Ithaca, New York, was wearing dark clothing and not carrying a light, according to Jaffe. The man’s wife, who was just ahead of him was not struck. The pedestrian was initially transported to the Beebe Medical Center where he was subsequently transferred to the Christiana Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the pick-up truck, a 57-year-old male from Ocean View, was properly restrained and not injured as a result of this crash.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
