Newark – The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a serious motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 11:48 a.m., Tuesday, August 27, 2019, on DE Rt. 72 northbound, just north of Old Baltimore Pike (entrance to Royal Farms).
The initial investigation has determined that a 2013 Jeep Wrangler, operated by a 27-year-old Middletown man, was traveling northbound on Rt. 72, north of Old Baltimore Pike, in the area of the Royal Farms entrance, with the right of way. A 2007 Toyota Corolla, operated by a 63-year-old Newark man, was traveling southbound on Rt. 72, attempting to turn left into the Royal Farms. The Toyota turned directly into the path of the Jeep at which time the vehicles collided, police said. Both vehicles came to rest in the roadway.
The driver of the Toyota was transported to the Christiana Hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the Jeep was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Northbound Rt. 72 was closed for approximately 90 minutes while the scene was investigated and cleared.

Newark – The Delaware State Police are currently on scene of a serious motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 11:48 a.m., Tuesday, August 27, 2019 on DE Rt. 72 (S. Chapel St.) northbound, just south of Old Baltimore Pike (entrance to Royal Farms).
The crash is involving two vehicles and one of the operators was transported the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries.
As a result of the crash and ongoing investigation all lanes of Rt. 72 northbound are closed in the area of Old Baltimore Pike. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes of travel.
The investigation is in the early stages with further details being released as they become available.
Update: The roadway appears to have reopened.
