Newark Police Make Arrest In Armed Robbery Near UD Campus

Newark Police make an arrest in the armed robbery of a Newark liquor store.

Police said after surveillance photos of the suspect were released to the public on 11/11/19, the Newark Police received multiple tips identifying the suspect as Joshua Nicholson, 18, of Newark.

On 11/12/19, an arrest warrant was issued and Nicholson was taken into custody that evening at a Newark residence without incident.

Nicholson was transported to Newark Police Headquarters where he was charged with Robbery First Degree and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. Nicholson appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $40,000 secured bail. Nicholson was turned over to the custody of the Howard R Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.

Newark Police are continuing their investigation into an armed robbery that occurred near the University of Delaware.

On October 30, 2019, at 2:22 hours, Newark Police were dispatched to an armed robbery that had just occurred at Modern Liquors in the 200-block of East Delaware Avenue, according to police.

Officials said the suspect entered the business, displayed a firearm and demanded money.  The clerk provided an undisclosed amount of US currency and then fled the business on foot northbound.

The suspect is described as a white male, 5’8″, thin build and wearing a hat.
