Troopers: Woman Seriously Injured In Head-On Collision With Underage Drunk Driver

Millsboro- The Delaware State Police have arrested 20-year-old Isaias Chavez-Chilel for Vehicular Assault after he was involved in a crash while driving under the influence, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on January 23, 2020, at approximately 11:17 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision on Millsboro Highway, south of Collins Road, Millsboro. Upon arrival, Troopers observed a maroon Ford Fusion occupied by Chavez-Chilel and a white Hyundai Santa Fe occupied by a 24-year-old female. Through further investigation, it was determined that Chavez-Chilel failed to maintain his lane while traveling southbound on Millsboro Highway and struck the Santa Fe that was traveling northbound on Millsboro Highway head-on, said Jaffe. The operator of the Santa Fe was transported to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Upon contact with Chavez-Chilel, Troopers detected an odor of alcohol. A computer inquiry revealed that Chavez-Chilel did not have a valid driver’s license. He was transported to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where a DUI investigation was initiated. Chavez-Chilel was treated for minor injuries and was later transported back to Troop 4 where he was charged with the following:

Vehicular Assault First Degree (Felony)
Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol
Failure to Have Insurance Identification
Driving Without a Valid License
Driving on the Wrong Side of the Roadway
Underage Possession/Consumption of Alcohol

Chavez-Chilel was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $8202.00 cash-only bond.
