Just after 3:00 on Saturday afternoon, March 7, 2020, officers from the Milford Police Department’s Patrol Division responded to the parking lot of Walmart on North DuPont Boulevard (US Rt 113) to a report of two people being struck by a vehicle, according to Sgt. Robert Masten.
Masten said upon arrival officers made contact with both victims, with one being in the crosswalk on the east side of the parking lot and the second being on the northeast side of the parking lot.
Both victims were transported to the Bayhealth Sussex Campus to be treated for serious injuries. The investigation revealed the suspect vehicle reportedly accelerated prior to striking both victims and failed to stop after striking the two, said Masten. Neither of the victims is believed to have been known by the driver. One of the victims was a 68-year-old woman and the other was a 65-year-old man.
The suspect vehicle was later located unoccupied in a parking lot nearby. Through further investigation police identified the driver as Kala I. Fluitt, 23, of Ellendale. Fluitt was taken into custody on Sunday at her home in Ellendale without incident, according to Masten.
She has been charged with two counts of Assault 1st Degree, two counts of Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, Tampering With Physical Evidence, two counts of Leaving the Scene of a Collision Resulting in Injury, Reckless Driving, and Failure to Report a Collision Resulting in Injury.
Fluitt was presented at the Justice of the Peace Court #7, where bail was set at $81,350.00 secured. She is scheduled to appear at the Kent County Court of Common Pleas on later this month
She has been committed to the custody of the Delaware Department of Correction and is currently being held at the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution.
