Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki and Police Chief Robert J. Tracy announced today that two more Wilmington police officers have tested positive for the coronavirus. The officers had interacted with another officer who tested positive for the coronavirus last Saturday. Police Chief Tracy was informed today of the two additional positive COVID-19 test results.
One of the officers last reported to police headquarters on Saturday, March 28, and is self-isolating, while the other officer last reported to work on Tuesday, March 24, and is also self-isolating.
Mayor Purzycki said the City consulted today with state public health experts to discuss the latest confirmed cases. The Wilmington Police Department has also retraced the activities of the officers at work to determine any risk to other officers or the public. Three additional officers have now been tested and are self-isolating while five other officers are either self-isolating or self-monitoring. There is no indication currently that there is any threat to the public.
Chief Tracy said portions of police headquarters on Walnut Street where any of the affected officers worked were deep-cleaned with virus-killing materials last Sunday. And, as he did a few days ago, Chief Tracy issued a memo to department staff today about the latest developments and has also been addressing shift roll calls personally to address any officer concerns.
Mayor Purzycki said the City will continue to act swiftly to protect employees and the public as the COVID-19 crisis continues to affect the City, state, region, and nation.
