Officials Investigating Fire At Abandoned Naval Base In Cecil County

Port Deposit, Maryland – Just after 11:30 Wednesday morning firefighters with the Water Witch Volunteer Fire Company along with surrounding companies responded to the abandoned Bainbridge Naval Training Center along Bainbridge Road for reports of a structure fire.

Upon their arrival crews reported that the two-story, former dining hall building was fully involved.

Approximately 50 firefighters worked for about two hours to bring the fire under control. No injuries were reported.

Officials with the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal said the fire is under investigation.

Abandoned in 1976, the Bainbridge Naval Training Center was the U.S. Navy Training Center sits on the bluffs of the northeast bank of the Susquehanna River. It was active from 1942 under the Commander of the Fifth Naval District, based in Norfolk, Virginia.

Congress appropriated the campus of the Tome School for boys to create the training center which sat between various important naval centers of World War II: about 35 miles northeast of Baltimore, Maryland, and 75 miles from Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
