Troopers Identify Newark Man Killed While Attempting To Cross The Road

Wilmington- The Delaware State Police have identified the pedestrian who died in a crash on July 3, 2020, on South Heald Street in Wilmington, as 24-year-old Josue Ortiz, of Newark.

Wilmington– The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred last evening, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe.

Jaffe said the incident occurred on July 3, 2020, at approximately 11:39 p.m., when a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling southbound on South Heald Street from the city of Wilmington. South Heald Street is dark and has no artificial lighting in the area. A pedestrian was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of South Heald Street from the west side of the roadway to the east. The pedestrian entered directly into the path of the Tahoe and was subsequently struck.

The operator of the Tahoe, a 45-year-old male from Wilmington remained on scene. He was properly restrained and not injured.

The pedestrian, a 24-year-old male from Newark was pronounced deceased at the scene. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

South Heald Street north of Rogers Road was closed for approximately 2 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
