Troopers Identify Passenger Killed When Car Struck Tree Early Sunday

Georgetown– Delaware State Police have identified the individual who died in a crash on August 16, 2020, on Sand Hill Road, Georgetown, as 75-year-old Radia Balfour of Felton, DE.

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 9:58 a.m., Sunday, August 16, 2020, on Sand Hill Road south of Neptune Road, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Heather Pepper.

Pepper said the initial investigation has determined a 2009 Toyota Camry, driven by a 42-year-old Felton woman, was traveling southbound on Sand Hill Road. As the operator was negotiating a left curve, the operator lost control of the vehicle, and it began to rotate counterclockwise as it exited the east edge of the road. The Toyota then slid in the grass before the passenger side struck a tree and began rotating clockwise before coming to rest just east of the tree facing southwest.

The driver of the Toyota. properly restrained, was transported to Beebe Hospital by ambulance and admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.

The right front seat passenger of the Toyota, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Beebe Hospital by ambulance. The passenger was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at Beebe. Identification is pending notification of next to kin.

Impairment is not a contributing factor in the crash.

Sand Hill Road was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
