Viral Video Of Wilmington Police Arrest Is Not What It Seems

Earlier today First State Update was made aware of a video that purportedly showed a man struck by a Wilmington Police patrol vehicle during a chase.

The video shows the handcuffed man bleeding from the mouth shortly before he appears to pass out. A crowd forms around the officers and begins yelling at them, blaming them for running him over.

Wilming ton Police said that at around 12:45 p.m., police officers observed an armed subject in the area of 7th and Washington Streets. Patrol officers took the suspect into custody without incident, recovered a firearm, and narcotics. As they began their investigation the suspect, speaking with an officer, he attempted to escape from police custody on foot, during which time he tripped and fell, resulting in an injury to his face. He was transported to the hospital where he is expected to be treated and released.

The suspect, 27-year-old Shawn Mitchell, is being charged with multiple gun offenses, a drug offense, and resisting arrest, assault, and escape charges.

Additionally, a police officer who was chasing the suspect on foot fell and sustained an injury. That officer was transported to the hospital for treatment.
