15-Year-Old Arrested In Armed Newark Carjacking Attempt

Newark Police are investigating an apparent carjacking attempt with shots fired on Saturday, July 10, 2021.

Officials said the victim stated that around 6:45 am, he was in his car in the parking lot near the basketball/tennis courts in the area of Madison Drive and Dickey Park. Just blocks from the Newark Police station.

The victim stated that three males opened his door, pointed a gun at him, and tried to force him from the vehicle. After a brief physical altercation, the suspects fled back to their vehicle. The suspect vehicle was described as a grey sedan with Delaware registration. As the suspect vehicle was leaving the area, the suspect with the gun fired a shot in the victim’s direction, according to police.

The suspect vehicle was reported stolen to the Delaware State Police on Friday, July 9, 2021. It was later recovered in Wilmington the day of the attempted carjacking.

Based on a review of surveillance video and witness interviews, the driver of the suspect vehicle in this incident was identified as a 15-year-old male from Wilmington, said police. An arrest warrant was issued on July 15, 2021. Later that day, the suspect was arrested by Wilmington Police on unrelated charges.

The juvenile male suspect was charged by Newark Police with the following offenses:

Attempted Robbery First Degree
Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
Receiving Stolen Property Over $1500
Conspiracy Second Degree
The juvenile male appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 and was ordered to be held in default of $104,000 secured bail. The juvenile male was turned over to the custody of the New Castle County Detention Center in Wilmington.

The suspects are described as three younger black males wearing face coverings. The driver of the suspect vehicle was also described as a black male.

There were no injuries or damage reported from this incident.
