Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal single motor-vehicle collision that occurred on I-495 last night, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said on May 6, 2022, at approximately 9:24 p.m., a 2007 Grand Marquis driven by a 65-year-old man of Newark was traveling southbound on I-495 south of Philadelphia Pike. The Marquis left its lane of travel at a bend in the roadway and entered the median where the driver’s side of the vehicle struck a guardrail. As a result of the collision the vehicle overturned and came to rest on its roof.

The 65-year-old operator of the Marquis was transported to Christiana Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The 64-year-old female front seat passenger of Newark was transported to Christiana Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

Southbound lanes of I-495 were closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.
