“Chef Boyardee” Bank Robbery Suspect Tied To Multiple Bank Robberies

Newark Police and State Police say the suspect in Tuesday’s TD Bank Robbery is tied to a total of 8 bank robberies that occurred throughout New Castle and Kent Counties beginning in June.

On July 12, 2022, at about 12:17, a male suspect entered the TD Bank at 230 East Delaware Avenue in Newark, according to Lt Andrew Rubin.

Rubin said the suspect, who was wearing a face covering, presented a note to two different tellers, a male and a female, demanding that they place money in bags provided by the suspect. The tellers complied by turning over money and the suspect fled the bank in a vehicle.

A short time later, officers observed a person matching the suspect’s description in a vehicle stopped in traffic on West Main Street. Officers took the suspect into custody at the scene. Evidence related to the robbery was found in the vehicle said Rubin.

The suspect was identified as Calvin Samuel, 39, of Valley Stream, NY.

Through investigative means, Samuel was also identified as the suspect in the June 27, 2022 bank robbery at the PNC bank on East Main Street said Rubin.

Samuel was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with:

June 27, 2022 PNC Bank Robbery

Robbery First Degree
Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony
July 12, 2022 TD Bank Robbery

Robbery Second Degree (2 counts)
Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony (2 counts)

Samuel appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $90,000 cash bail. Samuel was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.

Delaware State Police have said they have also charged Samuels, 39, for robbery following an incident in June.

Troopers say on June 17, 2022, at approximately 1:43 p.m., troopers responded to the Wells Fargo bank located at 2450 Glasgow Avenue for an alarm activation. Upon their arrival, it was discovered that the bank had just been robbed and the suspect had fled the scene. The ensuing investigation revealed that the suspect had entered the bank and presented a teller with a demand note. The teller surrendered money to the suspect, and the suspect exited the building and departed from the area in an unknown direction towards an unknown destination. No one was injured in this incident.

Through investigative means Newark officers connected Samuels to a total of 8 bank robberies that occurred throughout New Castle and Kent Counties beginning in May 2022 within the city limits of Wilmington, Newark, Dover, and Middletown.

Samuels was charged with the following charges stemming from the Glasgow robbery:

Robbery 2nd Degree (Felony) – 2 counts
Samuels was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #2 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $12,000 cash bond.

Many on social media dubbed the suspect the “Chef Boyardee” Bank Robber due to the chef like headgear worn in some of the robberies.

We will update this story with the charges from the other cities when they are released.
