Wilmington Firefighter Injured In House Fire Monday

At 7:00 pm on Monday September 5th, 2022, Wilmington Fire units were dispatched to the 400 block of W. 23rd street for a residential structure fire.

On arrival, units found the correct address to be in the 2100 block of N. Monroe Street and began fire suppression efforts, operating at a three-story residential structure. Heavy fire was found in the rear of the structure, which extended to the second and third floors. Battalion Chief of District 1 arrived, assumed command, and quickly requested an additional engine to the fire scene. Squad 4 personnel stretched attack lines into the structure and began extinguishing fire on each level of the home.

Two additional hand lines were placed into service while Ladder 1 and 2 personnel simultaneously began searches of the residence and began vertical ventilation to aid in visibility for interior crews and suppression efforts. Due to the construction of the home, crews operated on the third floor for an extended time, extinguishing concealed pockets of fire until Command placed the situation under control at 7:38pm.

One firefighter was transported to Wilmington Hospital for a medical evaluation and was released back to duty shortly after. The Fire Marshal’s Office is currently investigating the cause and
origin of the fire.
