Police: Parking In Handicapped Spot Leads To Altercation With Trooper

The Delaware State Police have arrested 39-year-old Darnell Dorsey from Wilmington, DE for felony resisting and drug charges following an incident Monday night.

Officials said on March 6, 2023, at approximately 10:25 p.m., a trooper on patrol observed a Nissan Maxima parked across two handicapped parking spots without a placard displayed in the parking lot of Wawa located at 4651 Ogletown Stanton Road in Newark.

The trooper made contact with the operator who was still in the driver’s seat and immediately observed marijuana in plain sight inside the vehicle. During contact, the suspect refused to provide his identification and would not comply with any of the trooper’s commands. When the trooper attempted to remove the suspect from the vehicle, he attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended police said. While attempting to place the suspect into handcuffs, he resisted arrest with force. After a physical altercation with the trooper, the suspect identified as Darnell Dorsey was taken into custody. A subsequent search of his vehicle led to the discovery of approximately 1.5 grams of crack cocaine, approximately 17 grams of marijuana, 2 Adderall pills, and drug paraphernalia according to police.

Dorsey was transported back to Troop 6 where he was charged with the following:

  • Possession With Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance (Felony)
  • Resisting Arrest with Force or Violence (Felony)
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Possession of Marijuana
  • Parking in a Handicapped Space

Dorsey was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court #11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $5,300 secured bond.
