Patient Succumbs To Injuries Suffered In Newark Crash

On April 28, 2023, at about 2233 hours, Newark Police were dispatched to the intersection of Library Avenue (SR 72) and Wyoming Road for a serious crash.  Upon arrival, officers found two vehicles, each with three occupants, at the scene.

Lt Andrew Rubin said an investigation at the scene determined that a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling southbound on Library Avenue approaching Wyoming Road.  At the same time, a 2021 Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound on Library Avenue approaching Wyoming Road.  The Toyota began to turn left onto Wyoming Road in front of the Jeep and the Jeep struck the Toyota said Rubin.

The front passenger of the Toyota was trapped in the vehicle and required extrication by Aetna Hose Hook & Ladder Company personnel.  This passenger was transported to an area hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.  The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

The driver and passenger from the Toyota were each transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Two passengers from the Jeep were also transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries according to Rubin.  The driver of the Jeep refused transportation.

The Newark Police Department was assisted at the scene by New Castle County EMS paramedics, Aetna Hose Hook & Ladder Company, the University of Delaware Emergency Care Unit, and the Delaware Department of Transportation.

The roadway was closed for about 3 hours while the crash was investigated by the Newark Police Department Traffic Unit.  Impairment is not suspected as a factor in this crash on the part of either driver.
