Wilmington Officer Involved In Shooting Wednesday Morning

Wilmington Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 600 block of South Heald Street this morning.

At 8:46 a.m., Wilmington Police responded to a residence in the 600 block of South Heald Street in reference to a call about a suicidal subject armed with a knife seen actively stabbing himself. Officers encountered the 35-year-old male suspect, who refused verbal commands to put down the weapon and advanced toward an officer. At this point, the officer discharged their department-issue firearm, striking the suspect with once.

Officers took the suspect into custody and immediately began to render aid prior to the arrival of paramedics. The suspect was transported to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound and a life-threatening, self-inflicted stab wound. The suspect is listed in critical condition.

Police recovered the knife at the scene, and charges are pending further investigation.

The police officer was not injured.

This incident is under investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division, the Office of Professional Standards, and the Delaware Department of Justice.
