Mass Casualty Incident Declared At Wilmington Grand Prix Saturday

On Saturday, May 20, 2023, at approximately 1:15 pm, emergency response units, including New Castle County Paramedics, Wilmington Fire Department, Saint Francis Emergency Medical Services, and ambulances from Elsmere Fire Company, Five Points Fire Company, and Minquadale Fire Company, were dispatched to the intersection of N. King St. and E. 5th St. in response to a level 1 Mass Casualty Incident involving multiple bicyclists.

Upon arrival, the responding units confirmed the reports of multiple patients down. New Castle County Paramedics swiftly initiated triage and identified a total of 7 patients requiring medical attention. The injuries sustained by the patients included a broken collarbone, a broken hand, and road rash.

Two patients were in the care of Saint Francis Emergency Medical Services EMTs. One patient, whose age was not specified, had upper extremity injuries. New Castle County Paramedics provided on-scene treatment, and the patient was subsequently transported to Wilmington Hospital via a Saint Francis Emergency Medical Services ambulance. The patient was reported to be in stable condition at the time of transport.

Another patient, whose age was not specified, had injuries to the extremities on their right side. After receiving treatment from New Castle County Paramedics, this patient refused transport to the hospital.

An additional patient was transported to Wilmington Hospital via a Saint Francis Emergency Medical Services ambulance. Four additional patients at the scene refused transport.

Initial reports from the scene indicate that a crash amongst riders was the cause of the injuries. No other vehicle was involved

The responding agencies involved in managing the incident were New Castle County EMS (Paramedics), Saint Francis Emergency Medical Services, Wilmington Fire Department, and Wilmington Police Department.
