Task Force Takes Third Laurel Homicide Suspect Into Custody

The Delaware State Police have made a third arrest in the April homicide of 18-year-old Corey Mumford in Laurel, Delaware.

Investigators have identified 21-year-old Shyheem Latham-Purnell of Laurel as a third suspect involved in the case. Latham-Purnell was apprehended earlier today in Maryland by members of the Maryland Marshals Task Force.

The incident occurred on April 14, 2023, at around 2:40 p.m. when the Laurel Police Department responded to a shooting in the vicinity of the 100 block of Sunset Drive at the Wexford Village Apartments. Upon arrival, officers discovered Corey Mumford behind one of the apartment buildings, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The officers immediately initiated CPR and other life-saving measures until emergency medical services arrived. Corey was then transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Due to the serious nature of the case, the Laurel Police Department requested the assistance of the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit to lead the investigation.

In the subsequent weeks, two suspects were identified and arrested in Maryland for their involvement in Corey Mumford’s murder according to police. Jhalir Henry was arrested on April 21, 2023, and Donregus Holland was apprehended on May 18, 2023. However, the investigation continued as detectives worked to uncover any additional individuals connected to the crime.

Members of the Maryland Marshals Task Force located Latham-Purnell at a residence in Salisbury, Maryland, and took him into custody without any incident.

Currently, Shyheem Latham-Purnell is being held in Maryland, awaiting extradition to Delaware. Once extradited, he will face several charges, including Murder First Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, and Conspiracy First Degree.
