Major Newark Intersection To Be Closed For Two Weeks

New Castle County motorists should be aware of upcoming road closures and detours at the intersection of Library Avenue and Main Street in Newark.

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) has announced the closures, which are scheduled to take place from July 7th at 7:00 pm to July 17th at 7:00 am.

During this period, the northbound section of Rt 72/Library Avenue will be closed from Wyoming Road to Rt 273/Main Street. Similarly, the southbound Rt 72/Library Avenue will be closed from Washington Street/McKees Lane to Delaware Avenue. Motorists will not be able to make a left turn onto southbound Rt 72/Library Avenue from Rt 273/Main Street. However, access to College Square will remain open.

Following the initial closure, from July 17th at 7:00 am to July 24th, further changes will occur. The southbound section of Rt 72/Library Avenue will be closed between Washington Street/McKees Lane and Delaware Avenue. Additionally, the left turn lanes onto Main Street and the through lanes on northbound Rt 72/Library Avenue will be closed between Rt 273 Main Street and Cleveland Avenue. Rt 273 Main Street itself will be closed from Marrows Road to Main Street. However, local access will still be maintained up to Rt 72 Library Avenue.

Motorists traveling in this area should exercise caution and anticipate delays due to these closures. DelDOT advises drivers to plan their routes accordingly and follow the designated detour signs. Detours will be in place to redirect traffic around the affected areas, ensuring the smooth flow of vehicles and minimizing disruptions.
