Sources Confirm Trooper Injured During Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting Thursday

Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting incident that took place on Hessler Boulevard Thursday morning.

Rescue crews responded to Hessler Boulevard between Lowes and the Delaware Department of Motor Vehicles at 7:39 for reports of a shooting.

A statement from the Delaware state police stated “DSP is on-scene of an officer-involved shooting near the Lowe’s on Hessler Boulevard in New Castle. The suspect is dead and investigators are responding. More details to follow.”

FSU has confirmed that one person was shot in the chest and was later transported to the hospital where they were pronounced deceased. The circumstances that led to the confrontation between law enforcement and the suspect have not yet been disclosed.

First State Update has been able to confirm that a Trooper was the second individual who sustained what initially was reported as a gunshot wound to the wrist. The wound has been described to FSU as a minor injury. The Trooper was subsequently transported to Christiana Hospital for medical treatment.

We have learned that the Trooper was treated and released from the hospital. Several state police tactical officers, dressed similarly to those observed at the scene, departed the hospital shortly after 10:00 a.m. as well, readers tell us.

We have confirmed with multiple sources that the Trooper was injured, however, the police have not officially confirmed whether this individual was indeed an officer.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing and we are expecting the State Police to make a statement at a press conference expected to take place shortly.
