Inmate Charged In May Shooting Of 17-Year-Old

The Dover Police Department has arrested Khalil Smith, a 19-year-old resident of Dover, following an investigation into a shooting on Spruance Road. The shooting occurred in May of this year and which left a juvenile injured.

Upon obtaining warrants, Smith was arraigned on several charges. These include possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, multiple counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited, reckless endangering in the first degree, second-degree assault, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, second-degree conspiracy, and criminal mischief.

Police said in early hours of May 9, 2023 officers were called to the 100 block of Spruance Road due to a shooting incident. Upon their arrival, officers found a 17-year-old male with a gunshot wound to his upper body.

After providing immediate aid, the victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. It was also discovered that a vehicle had been struck by gunfire during the incident. At the time, authorities reported no additional injuries and had not identified any suspects.

Smith was taken into custody on October 30, 2023, while he was already incarcerated at Sussex Correctional Institute on unrelated charges.
