Officials Update Crash That Closed Route 9 Wednesday

Delaware State Police are investigating a serious motor vehicle accident that occurred on New Castle Avenue (Route 9) in the area of the intersection with Rogers Road just before 8:30 on Wednesday morning.

The incident, which took place at approximately 8:27 a.m., involved a two-vehicle collision where a pickup truck struck the rear of a flatbed tractor-trailer according to NCC Paramedics S/Sergeant Abigail Haas.

Emergency services were dispatched to the 4000 block of New Castle Avenue in response to reports of a motor vehicle with an unresponsive subject. Upon arrival, first responders found the approximately 40-year-old male operator of the pickup truck trapped in the vehicle. Extrication procedures were initiated by fire department personnel and completed in under 10 minutes.

The trapped man was treated by the New Castle County Paramedics for a head injury and was transported to the Christiana Hospital in Stanton, in serious condition. The helicopters, including one that landed at the scene, were later recalled and not used for the patient’s transport.

In response to the accident, the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) has closed New Castle Avenue (Route 9) near the accident site.

Responding agencies to this incident included New Castle County EMS (Paramedics), Minquadale Fire Company, Holloway Terrace Fire Company, Good Will Fire Company, and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit.
