Newark Police Charge Man With Attempted Kidnapping

The Criminal Investigations Unit of the Newark Police Department investigated an incident that was reported to have occurred at the Acme grocery store located at 100 Grove Lane.

Officials said the victim’s family reported that on February 17, 2024, at approximately 3:45 P.M., an 8-year-old child was seated in a grocery cart while in the store. Police released images of an unknown black male, who they said was not known by the child or the people that she was with. Police said the man took control of the cart and began to quickly push the cart away.

The man was stopped and confronted by the people who were with the child in the store. The male let go of the cart and left the store after the confrontation according to police.

Shortly after the images were posted by the media the officials said that they had identified the man as Derrick White, 40, of Wilmington as the person depicted in images from the investigation.

On Monday Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for White, charging him with Attempt to Commit Kidnapping Second Degree. He turned himself into the Newark Police Department on February 20, 2024.

White appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #20 by video and was arraigned on his charge. Hewas turned over to the State of Delaware Department of Correction after failing to post bond..
