File

Delaware State Police are investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that occurred yesterday evening just west of Laurel.

Officials said on May 4, 2024, at approximately 6:48 p.m., a Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling westbound on Sharptown Road, west of Mt. Pleasant Road, at an apparent high rate of speed. For unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the north side of the road. It then struck a drainage ditch, causing it to overturn and crash into a utility pole.

The passenger, whose identity is unknown at this time, was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The driver, a 27-year-old man from Bloxom, Virginia, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

The roadway was closed for approximately four hours while investigators examined the scene and cleared the roadway.
