Officials: Man Intentionally Rammed Police Car, Three Hospitalized

The Dover Police Department has arrested Djerryson Charles, 26, of Milford, on various charges following a serious vehicle collision on Tuesday afternoon.

The investigation began at approximately 3:50 p.m. when the Dover Police Department received a call to assist the Capital Police Department with an erratic driver at the Dover Department of Motor Vehicles.

Officials said Capital Police attempted to stop the vehicle operated by Charles; however, the vehicle reversed and intentionally rammed the occupied police vehicle, causing the officer to sustain injuries. The officer, a 2-year veteran of the Capital Police Department assigned to Patrol, was transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus for treatment.

The vehicle then left the parking lot and drove northbound on North DuPont Highway. At some point, the vehicle crossed over the median and was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes, striking multiple vehicles in the area of East Loockerman Street, according to police. These collisions caused the vehicle to become disabled. Charles fled the scene on foot but was taken into custody without incident by Dover Police Officers responding to the scene.

As a result of the collision, a 48-year-old male and a 22-year-old male were transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus for injuries.

Upon taking Charles into custody, officers noticed signs of impairment and proceeded with a DUI investigation. Following the investigation, Charles was arrested for DUI and related charges. He was then transported to the Dover Police Department, where he was processed and arraigned.

Charles was committed to SCI on $37,600 cash bail on the following charges from Dover Police:

  • Reckless Endangering First Degree (3 counts)
  • Vehicular Assault First Degree (2 counts)
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Injury
  • Reckless Driving
  • DUI – Drug
  • Several Traffic Charges

Additionally, Charles was committed to SCI on $25,000 secured bail on the following charges from Capital Police:

  • Assault First Degree
  • Reckless Endangering First Degree (2 counts)
  • Conspiracy Second Degree (2 counts)
