7-Year-Old Child Critically Injured In Kirkwood Highway Crash

On Saturday night emergency crews responded to the scene of a serious motor vehicle collision with entrapment on Kirkwood Highway at Brighton Avenue. The crash, which occurred at approximately 7:03 p.m., left a 7-year-old girl trapped in a vehicle for nearly 20 minutes as rescue crews worked to extricate her.

New Castle County Paramedics, along with personnel from Elsmere Fire Company and Cranston Heights Fire Company, responded to the crash site. Upon arrival, paramedics found the young patient in the care of Elsmere Fire Company EMTs. She had sustained injuries to her extremities and was suspected of suffering internal injuries officials said.

After being freed from the wreckage, the child received on-scene medical treatment from New Castle County Paramedics before being transported in critical condition to Nemours A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington. She was accompanied by paramedics in an Elsmere Fire Company ambulance.

Delaware State Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
