Officer Injured During Saturday Arrest

A Newark man was taken into custody late Saturday night following a welfare check that led to a DUI arrest and a struggle resulting in an officer injury.

Officials said on May 3, 2025, at approximately 11:37 p.m., officers with the Newark Police Department responded to a business in the 800 block of South College Avenue after receiving a report of a vehicle idling in the drive-through lane. Upon arrival, officers discovered 37-year-old Nicholas Dionisi of Newark asleep in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.

After waking Dionisi, officers observed signs of impairment and administered Field Sobriety Tests. Based on the results, they attempted to arrest Dionisi for driving under the influence police said. During the arrest, Dionisi actively resisted and pulled away as officers attempted to handcuff him. One officer sustained an injury during the altercation before Dionisi was successfully detained and transported to Newark Police Headquarters.

Dionisi was charged with Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol (3rd Offense), Assault Second Degree for injuring a law enforcement officer, and Resisting Arrest. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court #11 and issued a $5,500 cash bond.

Unable to post bond, Dionisi was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
