One Airlifted Following Early Morning Crash In Smyrna

(Smyrna, DE) A patient was airlifted in critical condition following a serious motor vehicle collision on Route 13 in northern Smyrna early Thursday morning.

Emergency crews were dispatched just before 4:40 a.m. for reports of a crash with possible entrapment. First-arriving units determined that, although the patient had sustained serious injuries, the individual was not trapped inside the vehicle.

As crews worked to stabilize the patient, Delaware State Police Aviation’s Trooper 4, which had already been en route, was notified that its services and onboard whole blood supply would be needed. The helicopter landed near the scene shortly thereafter.

With a county paramedic accompanying, Trooper 4 departed the crash scene and transported the patient to Christiana Hospital. At the time of transport, the patient was listed in critical condition according to initial report reports from the scene.

Route 13 in the area of the crash was closed in both directions during the incident and may still be experiencing delays.

This is a developing story.
