Police: Helo Catches Driver Fleeing After Fiery Crash

On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at approximately 1:08 a.m., officers from the New Castle County Division of Police, while on patrol, observed a Subaru Outback stopped at the intersection of Old Baltimore Pike and Sunset Lake Road.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as 30-year-old Christopher Lolly of Wilmington, appeared unresponsive in the driver’s seat. Officers activated their emergency lights and attempted to contact Lolly. Upon realizing their presence, Lolly fled the vehicle stop as officers attempted to wake him officials said Tuesday. Officers pursued the vehicle but lost sight of it near the intersection of Route 896 and Old Baltimore Pike.

A short time later, an officer discovered a vehicle on fire in the tree line near Old Baltimore Pike and Otts Chapel Road. The vehicle’s doors and trunk were open, but it was unoccupied and quickly became fully engulfed in flames. Upon investigation, the officer identified the vehicle as the Subaru Outback that had fled earlier.

The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit, Trooper 4, was called to assist with an aerial search and soon spotted a person emerging from the woods near Otts Chapel Road and entering an SUV. Officers quickly responded, stopped the vehicle, and identified Christopher Lolly, now a passenger in the SUV, as the same individual who had fled the earlier vehicle stop police said. As officers attempted to arrest Lolly, he resisted and attempted to destroy a bottle containing a liquid suspected to be PCP (phencyclidine). Lolly was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries and was later released.

Lolly was then transported to New Castle County Police headquarters, where he was charged with one felony count of attempted obstruction of justice, one felony count of disregarding a police officer’s signal, one misdemeanor count of resisting arrest, one misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled or counterfeit substance, one misdemeanor count of leaving the scene of a property collision accident, one misdemeanor count of driving while suspended or revoked, one misdemeanor count of driving a vehicle under the influence, one violation of speeding in excess of the posted limits, and one violation of failure to stop at a red light.

He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $1,155.00 unsecured bail. He was also found to have an outstanding warrant from the Wilmington Police Department and was arraigned on that charge as well.
