Wilmington, DE – Odyssey Charter School in Wilmington is facing scrutiny after parents reported that a weapon was found in a middle school student’s possession today, and no official notification was sent to families until hours later after media inquiries were made.
According to concerned parents, the discovery was made during the school day, prompting a wave of students contacting their families to be picked up early. Reports from parents indicate that students were instructed by staff not to discuss the incident. No lockdown procedures were implemented, and no heightened security measures were introduced at the time, despite the presence of an ambassador from Greece on campus.
Parents also disclosed that in the past few months, multiple threats had been discovered written on bathroom walls, warning of potential violence, and that the school had previously conducted random bag checks. However, those checks reportedly ceased weeks prior to today’s discovery according to a parent that reached out to FSU.
Several readers have reached out to FSU telling us that they were told that a BB gun was found.
In a message issued to families after media inquiries were made, Odyssey Charter School stated that a student brought a toy gun to school, that the matter was promptly investigated, and that there was no real threat to students. The school emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious behavior and reassured families that student and staff safety remains a priority.
At this time, law enforcement has not released any official information regarding the type of weapon involved. It remains unclear whether the object found was a toy gun, as school officials claim, or something else. No public statements have been issued by the police regarding the incident.
