Carjacking Suspect Was On Probation And Wanted At The Time

Wilmington Police have arrested a man in connection with a carjacking that occurred last month in the city.

Officials said on August 18, officers responded to the 2000 block of Pennsylvania Avenue just after 4:30 a.m. following reports of a carjacking. The case was assigned to Detective Joran Merced of the Criminal Investigations Division. Through the course of the investigation, police identified 37-year-old Walter Lafferty as the suspect responsible police said Wednesday.

Lafferty was later taken into custody by the Middletown Police Department and charged with Robbery in the First Degree and Offensive Touching. Following his arrest, he was arraigned in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $20,250 cash-only bail.

Court records show that Lafferty was transported to Gander Hill on September 7, with a court appearance scheduled for next month. Authorities have not released details regarding the condition of the victim in the Pennsylvania Avenue carjacking.

Earlier in August, the Newark Police Department announced that Lafferty was wanted in connection with a burglary and multiple instances of unlawful use of a payment card dating back to June. He also had active warrants from other Delaware agencies for charges including terroristic threatening and shoplifting police said at the time. In addition, past arrest records show that Lafferty was previously charged in connection with a 2023 burglary case involving an occupied home.

Court records also show that Lafferty still has warrants listed in the system for Fail To Appear – Burglary First Degree/Violation Of Probation, and Carrying A Concealed Deadly Weapon A Firearm/Violation Of Probation.
