Wilmington Fire Department crews were dispatched to the 300 block of South Union Street after receiving reports of a residential structure fire. The incident occurred in a two-story row home, where firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the first floor.
According to Wilmington Fire Department Public Information Officer, Battalion Chief Robert Pryor, firefighters quickly located a fire in the kitchen that had begun to spread rapidly. Crews placed a hose line in service and moved inside the home to contain the flames. Their coordinated efforts prevented the blaze from consuming the entire structure.
While suppression efforts were underway, additional firefighters conducted searches of the residence to ensure all occupants were accounted for. Fire officials confirmed that two residents had already exited the home prior to fire department arrival. Those individuals were evaluated on scene for smoke inhalation and minor burns. Both declined transport to the hospital.
The blaze was brought under control in approximately 15 minutes, limiting fire damage primarily to the first floor of the residence. However, smoke damage extended throughout the remainder of the home. The quick response and effective tactics of firefighters helped to contain the incident and prevent further structural loss.
