Pedestrian Struck And Killed Thursday Near Newport

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Thursday evening in Wilmington.

Officials said on September 18, 2025, at approximately 6:30 p.m., a Nissan Sentra was traveling westbound in the left lane of West Newport Pike, approaching Rothwell Drive. At the same time, a pedestrian began crossing West Newport Pike from south to north and entered the westbound left lane, just east of Rothwell Drive. As the Sentra entered the intersection, it struck the pedestrian, believed to be in the crosswalk police said. Witnesses reported the traffic light was green when the Sentra entered the intersection.

The pedestrian, a 64-year-old man from Mexico, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

The driver of the Sentra, a 73-year-old woman from Wilmington, Delaware, was not injured.

West Newport Pike at Rothwell Drive was closed for approximately three hours while members of the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated and cleared the roadway.
