Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a school bus and an electric bicycle in Dover on Friday afternoon.
According to Delaware State Police, the collision occurred just before 4:00 p.m. as a school bus was preparing to turn from West Lebanon Road onto Royal Grant Way. At the same time, an electric bicycle carrying two teenagers continued through the intersection without stopping at a posted bicycle stop sign and struck the passenger side of the bus, according to police.
A 14-year-old male from Dover, who was riding as a passenger on the e-bike, was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. A 16-year-old male from Camden, believed to be the operator of the bicycle, was hospitalized with serious injuries police said. Neither was wearing a helmet.
The Caesar Rodney School District was bus driven by a 75-year-old man from Magnolia. Twenty-one elementary-aged students were on board at the time but were not physically injured. The driver was uninjured.
Caesar Rodney School District Superintendent Dr. Corey Miklus issued a statement on behalf of the district, confirming that both students attended Caesar Rodney High School. The district expressed deep condolences to the families and extended sympathy to classmates, staff, and the broader community.
The district announced that counseling and support services will be available to students and staff across affected schools beginning Monday, with resources continuing throughout the week. Families in need of additional support over the weekend were encouraged to contact Mental Health Delaware by dialing 211.
The roadway remained closed for approximately four hours while investigators from the Delaware State Police Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit examined the scene.
