One Dead, Two Injured In Newark Crossover Crash Saturday

Newark Police investigated a fatal crash on Christina Parkway late Saturday night after a head-on collision left one driver dead and two others injured. Officers were dispatched at approximately 10:06 p.m. to the area east of the Amtrak bridge, where callers reported that one of the vehicles involved had left the roadway and entered a wooded area with occupants trapped.

Responding officers found a sedan and an SUV with extensive damage. Firefighters from Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder and New Castle County Paramedics provided medical care to three patients. Investigators determined that the SUV crossed into the opposing lane of travel before the collision. Two people in the sedan were trapped and required extrication by fire personnel.

Both occupants of the sedan were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. One was admitted in serious but stable condition with injuries that were not life-threatening. The second was treated for minor injuries and later discharged.

The driver of the SUV was transported to a local hospital, where the individual died from injuries. Authorities are withholding the driver’s name pending notification of family members.

The Newark Police Traffic Response Unit responded to conduct the investigation. Christina Parkway was closed between Elkton Road and South College Avenue for approximately five hours while officers examined the scene. The investigation remains active.
