A pair of crashes on Interstate 95 in Wilmington sent five teenagers to the hospital Sunday evening according to initial reports, causing heavy backups in both directions.
The first collision was reported just before 6:20 p.m. on I-95 southbound at Lower Beech Street. Crews from the Five Points Fire Company responded and found a motor vehicle accident with two teens injured.
Minutes later, dispatchers received a report of a second crash on I-95 northbound in the area of Martin Luther King Boulevard. Wilmington Fire Department personnel responded at the northbound scene, where rescue crews reportedly found three injured teens.
According to report from the scene a total of five 16-year-olds were transported to Nemours Children’s Hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
Patient transport from that scene was handled by a Five Points ambulance and a Minquadale ambulance.
Both sides of the interstate experienced significant delays while first responders treated patients and cleared the roadway.
