A major crash on Interstate 95 in Newark Friday morning left multiple people injured and one woman critically hurt.
According to New Castle County Paramedics Lieutenant Abigail Haas, the collision occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes near the Delaware Service Area. Crews from the Christiana Fire Company and several mutual aid departments responded for reports of a crash involving entrapment.
Emergency personnel arrived to find a tanker truck and several passenger vehicles involved in a multi-vehicle crash. Six patients were evaluated at the scene. A 70-year-old woman, who was trapped in her SUV, was extricated by firefighters and treated for chest, extremity, and possible internal injuries before being transported to Christiana Hospital in critical condition.
A 69-year-old woman and a 73-year-old man, both occupants of a crossover vehicle, were also transported to Christiana Hospital with serious injuries, including possible head, neck, and back trauma. A 79-year-old man was taken to the hospital by basic life support ambulance, while two younger occupants, a 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman declined transport after being evaluated.
The tanker truck driver was reported to be uninjured. HAZMAT crews remain on scene cleaning up large fuel spill.
Units from the Christiana, Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder, Minquas, Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown, and Delaware City Fire Companies assisted at the scene, along with New Castle County EMS and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. The Delaware State Police are investigating the crash.
